What Wood-Destroying Pests Are Most Common In Our Area?

Many wood-destroying pests live throughout the United States, which can cause problems for homeowners. The most common offenders in our area include carpenter ants, termites, and wood-boring beetles.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are a common sight in Texas homes throughout the year, typically noticed first in late winter and early spring. This species is among the largest home-invading ants in Texas, ranging from ¼ to ½ of an inch in length. Carpenter ants have segmented bodies, including a black abdomen and head and thorax that are reddish-brown; worker ants of this species may range in color from black to yellow.

Unlike termites, carpenter ants do not eat wood. Nevertheless, these pests are known for causing damage to isolated pieces of wood and wooden structures in area homes. Since carpenter ants are wood-destroying insects, however, they are reportable on real estate transactions and may affect the sale or purchase of a new home.

Termites

Formosan, Eastern Subterranean, and drywood termites are the three most common species of termites in Texas, and are capable of causing massive damage to homes in our area. Formosan termites are a subterranean species commonly found in damp, dark spaces such as wall voids. Subterranean termites travel in mud tubes through the soil and into your home, where they will target moisture-damaged wood and destroy it over time.

Drywood termites differ from subterranean termites primarily by their feeding habits. These pests target sound wood, swarming at dusk or early evening to invade area homes. One of the best ways to identify drywood termites is by looking for their discarded wings on your windowsills or other notable points of entry. Wood-Boring Beetles

Wood borers, or wood-boring beetles, are medium-sized pests - typically ¾ of an inch in length. These pests have long horns and brown to black bodies with distinctive gold markings. Wood-boring beetles can injure branches and trunks of trees and occasionally emerge from firewood and woodpiles in or around your home.
